Pigging Procedure
How It Works
Pigging is a maintenance process where specialized devices called “pigs” are sent through pipelines to clean, inspect, or separate product batches while the pipeline remains operational. The pig travels through the pipeline using the flow of the product or a driving medium, allowing maintenance activities to be completed without dismantling the pipeline.
Key Aspects
- Function: Removes debris, inspects pipeline conditions, and prevents contamination.
- Launching: The pig is inserted into the pipeline through a pig launcher.
- Operation: The pig moves through the pipeline while performing its intended function.
- Receiving: The pig is collected safely at the receiving station.
Types of Pigs
- Cleaning Pigs: Remove buildup and debris.
- Inspection Pigs: Detect pipeline defects.
- Batching Pigs: Separate different product batches.
