Hydrogen Safety

How It Works

Hydrogen safety systems are designed to detect, control, and mitigate risks associated with the use, storage, and transportation of hydrogen—a highly flammable and explosive gas. These systems include gas detectors, ventilation, leak-proof piping, flame arrestors, and emergency shutdown protocols. Proper hydrogen safety starts with hazard identification, followed by the implementation of active and passive safety measures to prevent ignition, contain leaks, and protect personnel and infrastructure.

Key Features

  • Leak Detection Systems – High-sensitivity hydrogen gas detectors for early warning.
  • Explosion-Proof Equipment – Designed to operate safely in hydrogen-rich environments.
  • Ventilation & Dilution – Maintains safe hydrogen concentration levels in enclosed spaces.
  • Flame Arrestors & Pressure Relief Valves – Prevent ignition and control overpressure scenarios.
  • Automated Shutdown Systems – Immediate isolation and system lockout in case of a leak or fire.
  • Compliance with Global Standards – Follows ISO, NFPA, and IEC safety guidelines for hydrogen systems.

Common Use

Hydrogen safety systems are essential in industries and facilities that produce, store, or utilize hydrogen, including:

  • Hydrogen Production Plants – Electrolysis and reforming facilities.
  • Fuel Cell Applications – Power systems in vehicles, backup energy, and mobile devices.
  • Hydrogen Refueling Stations – Public and industrial hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
  • Research Laboratories – Controlled environments using hydrogen in experiments.
  • Chemical & Petrochemical Plants – Processes involving hydrogenation or synthesis.

Construction Material

  • Piping & Valves: Stainless steel (typically SS316) or copper alloys—chosen for hydrogen compatibility and resistance to embrittlement.
  • Sensors & Detectors: Made with corrosion-resistant housings and explosion-proof enclosures.
  • Containment Vessels: Carbon steel with special linings or composite tanks designed to handle high-pressure hydrogen storage.
  • Sealing & Gaskets: Hydrogen-compatible elastomers (like PTFE or Viton) to prevent leakage and degradation under pressure.
